New center game just uploaded in TpT! It supports 2.NBT.5 for second grade common core!
2.NBT.5: Fluently add and subtract within 100 based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
This game will help students practice adding two two-digit numbers. Students may choose any method or strategy they would like to solve the problems. While playing this game, students should be allowed to explore with different manipulatives like base ten blocks, counters, hundred charts, bundles, etc. Students should be discovering which addition strategies make sense to them.
Use with Daily 5 Math as Math with Someone or Partner Game center!

Fable FREEBIE!!!
I am getting ready for a big observation this week! YIKES! :) My kiddos are going to be reading two different fables and comparing the two stories. To help them understand each fable, they are going to work with this graphic organizer. I want to make sure they comprehend what is happening in each story before they try to compare them. Best news: its a FREEBIE!

Number Paths! 2.NBT.5- Fluently add and subtract within 100
As I was writing my small group math plans for this coming week, I had a really great activity planned where students were navigating their own 100 chart while I gave them directions like "go 10 more... subtract 10... go up one... add one... subtract 10... subtract 1... etc." I wanted the kids to write their own directions when they got the hang of it, so I decided to make an activity that they could do independently. Here is a new activity from TPT!

It is still difficult for the majority of my kiddos to add and subtract 10 mentally from any number, and this is a skill that we rely on heavily when adding and subtraction two and three digit numbers. We need more practice with this skill, and now we've got a FUN way to practice!

Ten Frame Game for Math Daily 5!
I hope everyone has had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday! I definitely needed some family time and a break from school to work on school stuff and such! :) I am even ALMOST done with my Christmas shopping! :)
Here is a new ten frame game that I made yesterday. My kids were not making progress on their math fact fluency, so after learning about how to teach kids "conceptually" in a PD... I whipped this up! :) Go on over to TpT and check it out! :) I have been using these ten-frame games in my classroom during "Math with Someone" and the kids LOVE it! Even though I have second grade, I have found that they still need math discussions about ten frames to develop their number sense!

Revised Work on Writing Reminders for Daily 5 (FREEBIE)
I'm on FIRE tonight! :) I have uploaded a revised Work on Writing document (without my name on it this time)! This is something I use in my classroom to provide my kids with some extra support during Work on Writing time. They cut their sheet in half and glued one part in the front cover of their Work on Writing Notebook and one part in the back cover. The kiddos sometimes just need a little reminder to get their creative juices flowing! I also wanted them to do some kind of reviewing and editing of their writing, so the checklist provides them with just a few things to go back and think about. Hope you can use this to support your Daily 5!

New TpT Products... Daily 5 Math Groups, too! AND a FREEBIE!
Today was the first day that my class really met in Daily Math Groups. We have been practicing procedures and routines and learning expectations for a while. (Just like with Daily 5.) Because we have implemented and practiced Daily 5 in reading, it was pretty simple for my kids to transfer what they have learned in reading to math. I met with each group today, each group completed Math with Someone and Math by Myself. The kids were FANTASTIC! I am working on uploading some of the games and activities I use!!! I will also upload a picture of how we organize our math group schedule!

Daily 5 Lesson Plan FREEBIE... and some thoughts about MATH!

Common Core FREEBIE!!!
Well... our first product is finally up in TPT! We are so very proud of it! :) We created a collection of materials to help you teach the second grade math standard 2.NBT.3. There is a break down of what the standard actually means, a summary of what students were expected to know/do in the grade before as well as what they will be expected of in the next grade. There are journal prompts, exit slips, activity ideas, and a pre/post assessment. Hope you find this useful! There is MUCH more coming!!! Click to GRAB it!

Daily 5 Word Work Tubs
Here is what my Word Work tub looks like for Daily 5. The kids grab a tub to work with for the round. There is an instruction sheet in the tub to remind them what to do, and all the needed materials. The word rings include sight words, word wall words, amazing (vocabulary) words, spelling words, etc. My kids LOVE the Word Work tubs. Right now, BEADS! is their favorite! :)
And NO fancy pocket chart for us! I just don't have the wall space in my classroom for each kid to have pockets in a chart. I just created a spreadsheet with my kids' names and had it turned into a poster. I laminated it and write on it each day with an Expo. It works wonderfully for us. I'm always putting my markers and such down somewhere, so I velcro-ed an Expo and a mini eraser to the board. :)

Common Core... A little background...
I just want to give you guys some background info about me! I teach in Kentucky, where we have fully adopted The Common Core Standards. I worked with The Common Core all last year, and I am continuing to work with The Standards this year, too. Two summers ago, I was part of the Curriculum Alignment Team which "broke down" the standards, created student learning targets and curriculum maps. We also created common assessments for our grade levels. During the entire year last year, I worked with Kim, our CIA at school. She's also a math person like I am. She was my "mentor" as part of a new program to provide support for 2nd year teachers. We spent a lot of time planning and working together to ensure that I was teaching the standards the way I needed to. With her help, I came to understand what the standards meant, and what the kids needed to be doing and showing me to show that they had mastered the standards. Now, I have a deep understanding of the standards, as well as how to teach them effectively.
Because the standards are so new, our school and district really have no texts, no series, no real resources that are strictly aligned to The Common Core--the standards are just too new! Teachers also interpret the standards differently, which results in some differences in teaching. Kim and I have decided that we are going to work with our teachers to find out what kind of resources they need to fully implement the standards into daily instruction. Our focus first is going to be math, but we will continue from there. Our hope is that we will create materials for all teachers to use that is clearly and explicitly aligned with The Common Core. We hope that we can not only reach the teachers at our schools, but also teachers across the nation. The Common Core is coming in YOUR state and district. We just want to provide teachers with the materials they need to completely understand the standards, feel comfortable with the standards, and effectively teach the standards to the kiddos.
We are currently working on creating "packs" of materials for each math standard. Included in these packs are a break-down of the standard, what the standard means, ideas to use in the classroom, student learning targets, journal entries, and assessments. We are also working on center activities and hands-on activities for students. These are coming very shortly! Our first pack is almost ready, and it focuses on place value.
Please let me know if there are specific standards that are coming up in your school and district that you need materials for. We will move these up on our list!
In the meantime, while we are finalizing the packs, I am going to share with you how my own classroom works. I plan to share Daily 5 ideas, small group reading ideas, classroom management ideas, and other "stuff" that may be helpful for other teachers. I STALK Teachers Pay Teachers and teaching blogs! I get LOTS and LOTS of amazing ideas from other teachers, and if I can offer other teachers some new ideas, I would be honored! I just want to attempt to pay back some of the inspiration other teachers have provided for me! :)

Test Run... With Some Daily 5!
So.. here is a picture of some of my word work "shakers." The containers came from the Dollar Tree and I just filled them with lots of STUFF that I thought would be relatively quiet! The words that they are looking for come from the Scott Foresman Reading Street series. There are about 3o words in the tubs, including spelling words, amazing words, selection vocabulary words, word wall words, and high frequency words. The kiddos shake it up, find the words, record the words in their journal and then choose what to do with them. (e.g. write sentences, count syllables, draw the meaning, etc.)
OH! And there are two of my "Fry Stick" tubs, too. (I saw these on Pinterest, I think. I'm really going to get better about posting where I find this stuff. I PROMISE!) I used foam sheets from the Dollar Tree, cut them into strips, and recorded Fry Phrases from one of the hundreds lists. These are the 100 and 200 tubs, I think. I also drew **** on some of the strips. The kids play by taking turns choosing a "stick." If they can read the WHOLE thing the FIRST time, they keep it. If not, they put it back. A stick with **** means an extra turn! The player with the most sticks when the tub is empty (or time is up) WINS! They LOVE these things!

So, this is all very, very new for me. My colleague and I are starting a blog and a TPT account to share some of our ideas regarding quality activities that are aligned with The Common Core Standards. At our school, most all of the teachers are really struggling to find good "stuff" to use that aligns with The Standards because they are so new. We've been working to create some things to use in our classrooms, and we thought other teachers may be interested in using some of our activities. We are starting in 2nd grade (because that's the grade I teach) with math and we will continue from there. Be on the lookout for documents being posted SOON! :)
Annndddd.... this whole blogging thing is super new for me. I hope I'm not making a mess out of stuff! I LOVE browsing other teachers' blogs and seeing all of their AMAZING ideas! But their blogs are all so stinkin' cute! I'm totally jealous. Maybe I will get better as I practice. Cross your fingers! I'd love any tips you can give me! :)
